CSIA Middle School Discipline Policy

…the road to RESPECT starts with one step…

In the CSIA Middle School, our focus is on respect: for oneself, for others (both peers and adults), for personal space, for property, for minds, for bodies.  Therefore, most of our ‘discipline’ will be focused on helping students to recognize and act using appropriate school behavior.  We expect students to act as responsible young adults, and as their teachers, it is our job to help them learn what that means.

 Discipline is a learning process.

·       Learn behavioral expectations

·       Exercise self-control

·       Apologize, and Accept consequences when you’ve not met expectations

·       Recognize a need to learn from mistakes: set goals & improve yourself

·       Never give up!

We recognize that in many cases, students simply need a reminder of appropriate behavior.  When reminded, it is important for students to apologize for their misbehavior, and to correct it.  In this manner, students are being respectful to teachers, and showing us that they recognize their errors, and will change the behavior.  Arguing with a teacher will only escalate the situation- often an apology/correction of behavior is all that is needed!  Sometimes, a time-out in another MS classroom will improve the situation.

However, when a student fails to correct his or her behavior, either in one class session, or after repeated reminders across multiple days, that student will be issued a demerit, and will serve detention during lunch and recess.  If this consequence fails to achieve the desired result (a positive behavior change), a call will be made to parents, and the student may be referred to the office for intervention with Sra. Graff.

DEMERIT FREE REWARDS as incentives for good behavior

v     School supplies

v     Special snack treats

v     Extra recess time

v     Homework passes

WE EXPECT APPROPRIATE CLASSROOM & HALLWAY BEHAVIOR

Be respectful to self, teacher, and peers during class time:

o        Talk only at appropriate times

o        Stay in your seat until given permission to leave it

o        Save make-up & hair repairs (as well as deodorant additions) for the restroom (& watch the strong scents please)

o        Avoid being distracted in class- pay attention to the teacher or focus on your assignment

Come prepared for class with all textbooks, SSR materials, and necessary supplies, like paper, pencils, binder

Walk in the halls, quietly, using a hall pass indicating permission to be out of class- ALWAYS have a pass to go to the office, and get to class on time

Come to school dressed to work, following CSIA’s Uniform Policy

Eat only at designated and appropriate times, i.e. no chewing gum, eating candy, cookies, chips, etc. outside of cafeteria; only water is allowed in classrooms to avoid accidental book damage & bug attraction

§         Gum chewing has been a major problem recently, as it ends up smeared under desks,

on the floor, inside books, and across bookshelves.  Therefore, students who are caught

chewing gum at school must write the following sentence 100 times; “I will not chew

gum ever again at Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy.”  The number of

sentences will increase with each additional infraction.

Save electronics for appropriate times (HINT- not in the classroom or hallways)

§         CD player, walkman, IPods/MP3 players, cameras, toys, games, pagers, cell phones (CPS Policy) disappear prior to entering CSIA, and should not be seen by teachers.

Cell phones must be kept turned off and out of sight.

(These items will be confiscated, turned into the office, and must be picked up by a parent.)

6th graders- Because 6th graders do not have lockers, all belongings will be kept in the classrooms in bookbags. We discourage students from bringing games or other expensive toys to school to minimize distractions.  Also CELL PHONES will be collected each morning by the homeroom teacher and returned at the end of the school day.

Take home necessary practice or homework materials, and store others in lockers, not on classroom floors/tables or in the hall (includes instruments)

If the following situations occur, a phone call (or email) will immediately be made to the parent,

and the student may be referred to the Principal with a 190 form:

Ø      Disrespect toward a teacher or other staff member

Ø      Insubordination (refusal to follow directions)

Ø      Cheating/Forgery of parent’s signature

We will follow the Columbus City Schools Guide to Student Conduct with regard to Level 2 and

Level 3 offenses.  Students will be sent to the Principal’s office with a 190 referral form, and disciplinary

action taken at that time may include suspension (in or out of school) or expulsion, depending on the

severity of the offense.

See the Guide for a detailed list of Level 2 & 3 behaviors, which includes:

Ø      Verbal or physical aggression toward other students or teachers

Ø      Repeated offenses of any nature
